Holding Space is a Work of Art
“I am:
A poet.
An expatriate mother of two small humans.
A household steward.
Bibiliophile.
Ritual maker and space holder.
An American ethnic studies/critical race theory scholar, researching emergent strategies, and untold histories in order to create infrastructures that bring the power of validation back into the hands of the marginalized and silenced.
An artist who uses creative methods to understand the movement of time, thought, and natural currents.
A member of LesVoiZines; a zine appreciation collective focussed on making art accessible and validating the art of the “amateur”.
The creator of Oefenen Baart Plezier; an annual compilation bearing witness to engaging with art as pleasure without a goal of a product or finished work in mind, a place where the draft and doodle are glorified.
As a part of GOD I want to explore the following questions:
How do we dismantle the indoctrination being propagated by systems of oppression?
How can we use ritual, history and “hobby” to bring an end to our participation in a society that does not value or respect any being unless it produces for profit?
What are the small steps that we can take towards a freer future?
How do play and imagination unlock doors on our journey to liberation?

I am especially looking forward to using Kapellekes, Begijnhofs, and elements of witchcraft to further understand the questions I am asking.”
In the Holding Space expo I was one of the two artists who utilised BLANCO as a working space/atelier. On display during the exhibition was a painting that I started and finished during my time there. Anxious Artist is a spontaneous ink on paper piece that features a window in the studio, and movement flowing in and out of the space. Above all I saw it as a meditation that helped me face my anxiety concerning showing my work to the public. I also created an altar in the first days of being in the space before we decided to create the expo. It was later titled I Thought You Told Me to Clean the Space so I Brought Some Sage and Candles. It revolved around feelings I had about being held in a creative space, and also dealt with the realisation that so many creative women in the past, specifically my grandmothers, never had space held for them.
I made the altar in hopes of repairing that lost opportunity for them and what they could have created. I made the altar in order to hold space. It featured a photo
of my maternal grandmother, a name card of my paternal grandmother (the only photo
of her was lost), and a taped empty box for participants to project their own ancestors onto the altar. There was also sage, amethyst, agate, a prayer candle to Frida Kahlo,
a wooden statue of Onze Lieve Vrouw met kind with a rosary of Guadalupe wrapped around it, all laid out on a precious scarf. In order to call participants into using the altar I lined votive candles in front of the objects with a box of matches with a sign that read "Light a candle if you like. Maybe think of someone who never got the space they needed/need. Xoxo GOD"
